Luminary Quilt Class Description

Join us for an exciting and creative quilting journey in May as we explore the art of making the stunning Luminary Quilt! In this class, you'll learn to craft a modern, eye-catching quilt using strip sets and improvisational cuts to form beautiful diamond shapes that come together to create a striking half-star design.

Class Details:

• • Skill Level: Confident Beginner (Participants should be comfortable using a rotary cutter and sewing machine)
  • Pattern Included
  • Finished Size: 42 inches x 55 inches
  • Materials Needed:
  • Star fabrics (included): For a custom color scheme: 30 strips (2 ½ inches wide), 40 squares (10 inches), a fat eighth bundle (18 fabrics) or the equivalent in scraps. The Sewing Labs has pre-cuts available for the quilt, or, if you prefer, you can bring your own.
  • Background Fabric: A 2-yard cut of background fabric may be purchased from The Sewing Labs for $12 or you may provide your own. You may want to wait to decide on a background fabric until you've begun piecing your star fabrics.

Class Breakdown:

• • First Session: Learn about color choices and cutting techniques for creating strip sets.
  • Second & Third Sessions: Construct strip sets, make cuts, and reassemble pieces into triangles. You’ll likely need to sew at home or during Open Sew sessions to keep up with the pace.
  • Final Session: Assemble your quilt top, which will be ready for quilting.

By the end of this class, you'll have created a beautiful quilt top that is ready for quilting, and you’ll have a fun, modern piece to showcase!

Additional Information:

• • Prerequisites: Participants need to be able to use a rotary cutter accurately and be familiar with sewing machine techniques.
  • Additional Notes: We anticipate that participants may need to sew at home or attend Open Sew sessions to complete the required sets. The last class will focus on assembling your quilt top, bringing you one step closer to finishing your beautiful quilt!

Quilting Basics Bootcamp:

If you haven't yet mastered the basic quilting skills, such as using a rotary cutter, sewing a quarter-inch seam on a sewing machine, or pressing your seams (both open and to one side), you may want to join our Quilting Basics Bootcamp on Tuesday, April 29^th, before the Luminary Quilt class begins. This will ensure you're fully prepared to get started on your quilt during the first Luminary class.
